What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a generative AI model developed and owned by OpenAI. It is a private, paid large language model (LLM) designed to provide helpful responses based on billions of data points it was trained on. You can use this tool for various tasks such as describing images or rewriting articles with improved grammar and spelling. By simply chatting with ChatGPT, you get the sensation of having a vast portion of the internet at your disposal.

ChatGPT is paid and costs approximately $20 per month for more comprehensive and capable models. However, if this price seems steep or if you prefer free alternatives to Google, open-source models come into play. These include tools like Ollama, which can be run on devices with a graphics card or an Apple device from the last three years. By using open-source models like LlaMA, you can maintain privacy for your conversations and work on projects under NDAs while still benefiting from this modern approach to productivity.

Other models, such as LlaMA2, OpenChat, CodeLlama, and SqlCoder, offer comparable features to ChatGPT. For mobile users, there are options like Phi-2 from Microsoft or Rocket-3B derived from StableLLM models. To facilitate easy and quick interaction with an offline copy of Rocket-3B, I even launched my own app called “Ari Helper” for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices. It is currently free to download.

The generative AI movement appears very promising, and its impact on daily productivity is already evident. As these machines become more impressive and capable, they will likely become indispensable tools that we may even forget were created by ourselves.
